Fish Eye and Cat Eye-
Drawing of graphite on paper
22.86 cm x 17.49 cm
September and November 2015
In this page I drew a whole bass to understand the anatomy of a fish so to make things easier I also labeled the important parts of the fish. It took forever to try to draw all the individual scales so for that reason I will not be drawing the whole fish. This drawing was inspired by the Japanese traditional gyotaku. But I don't think that I will do an actual gyotaku because it's not what I'm interested in doing.

Because I am not drawing the whole fish, I decided to focus on drawing the eye and first dorsal fin. I liked drawing the eye best and is what I will probably choose to do for my project. The dorsal fin was just to get an idea of what parts I could draw. I'm connecting this piece to Japanese fish prints called gyotaku even if it's not a print, it would be my interpretation of a "print".
Here is my rough planning sketch of what my final piece will look like. But in the final piece there will be different drawing pencils used to create a smoother blending of the overall piece. I will also press harder while coloring to make darker marks. When doing the planning sketch it was difficult to try not to smear the drawing, but on my final piece think that it will be easier to not smear. After drawing this I think that I'll do a series of animal eyes but in different mediums.
Here I did a rough sketch of how I was going to do my cat eye drawing. I choose to only do one because I would base it on this and I did think that another sketch would change how my piece would turn out. Both the cat eye and fish are can be submitted together because they are based on the same style of fish printing. Instead of doing a print I drew the eyes because I wanted to focus on only one part of the animal.
This is a blue fin gyotaku done by a Hawaiian artist named Naoki and it is the piece that inspired my series that I am going to be doing.
